What is the Science of Reading?

A colorful infographic showing five interconnected circles labeled 'Phonemic Awareness,' 'Phonics,' 'Fluency,' 'Vocabulary,' and 'Comprehension' to represent components of literacy development.

I’m committed to using research-based practices rooted in the Science of Reading. These proven methods guide my instruction, ensuring your child receives effective, evidence-based support tailored to their unique needs. My approach is built around the five essential components of reading:

  1. Phonemic Awareness is all about hearing and playing with sounds in words. We practice listening for beginning, middle, and ending sounds, manipulating and substituting each one. These skills are some of the building blocks that help children spell and read later on.

  2. Phonics connects those sounds to letters. Children learn how letters and groups of letters represent sounds, helping them sound out (or “decode”) new words when they read.

  3. Fluency means reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression. When children read fluently, it frees up their brain to focus on understanding and enjoying what they’re reading.

  4. Vocabulary is simply knowing and understanding words, both the ones we read and the ones we use when we speak. A strong vocabulary helps children make sense of what they read and express their own ideas clearly.

  5. Comprehension is the heart of reading. It’s what happens when a child not only reads the words but truly understands and connects with the story or information.

By weaving all five of these areas into every session, I help your child build a solid foundation for reading success and nurture a lifelong love of books and learning.

Play-based learning is essential for young children. It’s how they make sense of the world and stay engaged while trying new things. In our sessions, your child will take on meaningful literacy work in ways that feel playful and engaging, using games, movement, and interactive activities to build both skills and confidence. This gamified approach helps build confidence, encourages curiosity, and lays a strong foundation for a lifelong love of reading.
